United Outruns Clippers

United’s rushing offense proved too much for Columbiana to overcome in their 33-12 win Friday night at Firestone Park. United senior fullback Lincoln Urmson led all rushers with 171 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Junior running back Caden Marshall chipped in with 68 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown, while senior running back Cody Cope scored a pair of touchdowns to help the Eagle improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.

The game started off scoreless after two possessions apiece, until a pair of United sacks by Payne Brereton and Cody Cope forced a Clipper punt. After a first down run by Ward Kiko, Cody Cope took the subsequent handoff and went 31 yards to put the Eagles on the board first. Luke Courtney’s PAT was good, and the Eagles led 7-0 late in the first quarter.

After Columbiana turned the ball over on downs, United worked themselves into a 4th and 1 situation from their own 31 yard line. Lincoln Urmson took the ball off tackle and outraced Clipper defenders 31 yards for the second United touchdown. Luke Courtney hit another PAT, and the Eagles were up 14-0 with 11:11 remaining in the first half.

Columbiana quarterback Tony Kocanjer found the hot hand on the ensuing Clipper drive. After three consecutive first down passes, two to Ethan Clark and one to Eddie Clancy, Kocanjer was sacked by the United defense. However, a spearing penalty put the ball on the Columbiana 16 yard line. On the next snap, Kocanjer found Clancy again. This time for a touchdown. The PAT was missed, but the Clippers were on the board 14-6.

United tacked on one more rushing touchdown in the first half when Cody Cope plunged in from 13 yards out, his second of the night. The Clippers kept themselves in the game, when Tony Kocanjer found the end zone on 4th and goal from the 2 yard line with 1:02 left in the half. The two point conversion failed, but both teams went into the locker room with United holding a 20-12 lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, United found themselves on their own 9 yard line to start the 4th. On the first play of the quarter, Cameron Marshall found pay dirt from 9 yards out. Columbiana blocked the PAT, but United increased their lead to 26-12.

United added their fifth and final rushing touchdown of the game when Lincoln Urmson stiff armed a pair of Clipper defenders en route to a 38 yard touchdown. Luke Courtney connected on his third PAT of the night, and United took a 33-12 lead. That score would stand. United finished with 317 yards rushing to stay undefeated in league play.

“Coach Spaite is a great coach and his guys played real hard tonight,” said United head coach D.J. Ogilvie. “Our offensive line is the heart of our football team and Lincoln Urmson is a tough running back. We decided to run behind our line and let them pave the way.”

The Eagles improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in EOAC play, while Columbiana falls to 1-5 and 0-3 in league play. United will host East Palestine next Friday and Columbiana will travel to Valley Christian.
